Our final destination...

On the way to San Diego, the end of our trip, we stopped at Torrey Pines State Park. This park was created by Ellen Browning Scripps to ensure that some of the land near San Diego would remain as native bush. It’s a very fragile ecosystem, and some of it was still suffering from a fire that occurred several years ago. However, it is very peaceful, and you can walk out to the headlands for beautiful views of the ocean (still no whale sightings though!). There were very few people around, so we indulged our silly side, and jumped around.

As we were returning our car the day before we left, the next day was our drive out to San Diego Zoo. Having heard so much about this place, we got there just minutes after it opened. With our map in hand, we boarded the bus for a 30min tour around the park. This goes to all the main areas, but the zoo is so big that the only way to see everything is to do what we did, and spend all day there.

We will post some photos separately, there are just so many to sort through (we got a bit carried away and took 600 photos)

Needless to say, it was a hugely entertaining day, and we could have easily stayed longer.

The next morning on the way to drop of the car, we decided we should try and get some more culture, at one of San Diegos many museums, these are all pretty much located at Balboa Park - not too far away from downtown.

When we arrived in the area, the buildings and surrounding landscape was so appealing we skipped the museums and just walked around.

Hummingbird at San Diego Zoo.  It took us about 10 minutes to find one that would stay still long enough to be photographed, we got 4 or 5 good shots.
